Challenge
How do you turn a decade of user decline into sustainable growth through brand?
Browsers are a low-interest category. Most people don’t actively care about them, they just expect them to work. From a user perspective, they look and feel largely interchangeable.
Firefox, however, genuinely stands apart through its commitment to privacy and data protection.
The challenge was to make a new generation, who largely perceived Firefox as their parents’ browser, care again. We needed to communicate security and privacy in a way that felt human, contemporary and culturally relevant, without becoming heavy, technical or moralizing.
Process
Creative Direction & Concept
As Creative Director, I led the concept and creative direction for Built for You.
The idea emerged from a focused creative sprint in which we explored 18 distinct directions and tested three final concepts. The strongest-performing route centred on characters, playful, relatable and human, allowing us to talk about privacy and user agency in a way that felt accessible and emotionally resonant.
AI played an important role during the exploratory phase, supporting brainstorming, copy exploration, concept development and creative strategy. It helped us move faster and test ideas more broadly.
For production, however, we made a deliberate decision to go fully handmade.
Creaft & Execution
We partnered with the artist duo Ben & Julia to bring the campaign world to life. At a moment when much of the industry leaned heavily into AI-generated aesthetics and deepfakes, we consciously chose the opposite approach. The tactile, crafted look created a strong contrast in digital environments and helped the work stand out as a genuine scroll-stopper.
The campaign launched in Germany and France across social, digital and video channels. It was amplified by subcultural voices and creators who embodied the idea of online freedom, with a primary focus on Gen Z audiences.
Brand Platform → Built for You
When development began, Firefox’s existing brand guidelines were outdated and the new corporate brand identity was still in progress. To move forward without compromising coherence or quality, I led my team in creating a dedicated brand solution specifically for this campaign.
Together with the team, I developed the foundational brand platform behind Built for You, defining the core narrative, messaging and creative direction that shaped how Firefox showed up across all touchpoints.
The narrative was rooted in user agency and translated into a clear messaging framework built around simple, memorable statements. I also defined the tone of voice for all campaign expressions.
In parallel, the platform introduced an updated color system and a modernised evolution of Firefox’s visual language, making the brand feel more contemporary and culturally relevant.
This platform guided the entire creative system across markets, from OOH and video to social, partnerships and product-adjacent storytelling, ensuring consistency, coherence and a distinct visual and verbal identity.
Result
Built for You became Firefox’s most successful campaign in over a decade.
As a full-funnel initiative combining brand and growth marketing, both dimensions exceeded their respective benchmarks.
For the first time in years, Firefox did not simply slow its decline, it returned to growth. The campaign drove a clear uplift in daily new users and engagement, reversing a long-term downward trend and reestablishing Firefox as a relevant, trusted and human browser for a new generation.
